DIY IKEA kitchen remodel

Hi! Today I’ll be sharing a DIY tutorial with the DUKTIG kitchen from ikea. Why do a remodel on a children’s toy? Well this is an awesome kitchen, it has everything a toy kitchen needs and it’s a great price ($99 CAD), especially when you compare it to the other kitchens that are sold. It’s great, but the one thing we weren’t a fan of with this kitchen was that it was so plain looking- so we decided to give it a makeover!

We first searched for ideas of other remodelled kitchens that we liked to get some ideas. We saw one that was similar to what we were looking for with a few things we wanted to change up.

What you will need:

  • DUKTIG kitchen from ikea

  • Rust-oleum 2x ultra cover paint + primer - gloss white

  • Rust-oleum 2x ultra cover paint + primer - glass dark grey

  • Rust-oleum specialty metallic

  • Stick on back splash tiles for the dollar store

  • Gorilla glue

  • Marble peel and stick self adhesive wallpaper

  • Foam board

  • Utility Knife

We chose not to put the kitchen together until after it was painted to make it easier. First we organized what pieces would be spray painted white, grey, or silver, and what pieces wouldn’t be painted at all.

We painted all of the pieces once, let them dry for an hour, painted them again, and then left them to dry overnight before putting the kitchen together.

I laid out the marble peel and stick paper on top of a box and put the kitchen counter on it face down to measure how big it needed it to be. I then cut it out with a utility knife, making sure there was enough wallpaper to wrap around the edges and underneath the counter. I removed the film and applied the paper to the wood, using a card to ensure there were no bubbles, before cutting out the holes for the sink and stove areas. I again made sure there were no bubbles and used gorilla glue on the edges of the wallpaper to make sure it stayed in place.

The stick on back splash tiles were placed on a foam board (we only needed 3 of them), which we then glued to the back of the kitchen. We accidentally placed one of the tiles the wrong way (as shown in the photo below) so it doesn’t completely fit together, it wasn’t an issue for us but it’s an easy fix and they are able to fit together nicely.
We cut the extra foam board and backsplash at the sides off with a utility knife and left the extra foam board that was peeking out of the top.

The inside shelves for the oven and storage area and the microwave were left unpainted. They are an off white so you can see the difference between the white spray painted pieces and the unpainted pieces, but we preferred that the microwave didn’t completely blend in.

There are a couple of pieces that need touch ups so I’d suggest spray painting it three times instead of twice. I also suggest not spray painting in the winter like we did 😅 (unless you have a garage you can do it in).

I attached a few more photos of the kitchen below. We love how it turned out and Avalea couldn’t be happier with it!

This is a very easy project to do, the longest part was waiting for the spray paint to dry each time.

Thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed! ❤️
